To help you prepare for your trip, here's what you need to know about currency and payments while traveling with Native's Way in Costa Rica.
What currency does Native's Way use?
Unless otherwise stated during checkout, all Native's Way tour prices and reservations are listed and charged in U.S. Dollars (USD).
What currency is used in Costa Rica?
Costa Rica's official currency is the Costa Rican Colón (CRC). However, U.S. Dollars are widely accepted throughout the country's most popular tourist destinations.
Many businesses accept both U.S. Dollars and Costa Rican Colones.
Should I bring U.S. Dollars or Colones?
Either currency is acceptable for most travelers.
We recommend carrying:
- Small U.S. Dollar bills ($1, $5, $10, and $20) for tips and small purchases.
- A credit or debit card for larger purchases.
- Some Costa Rican Colones if you plan to visit local markets, small restaurants, or rural areas.
Avoid bringing large U.S. bills whenever possible, as some businesses may be unable to provide change.
Will I receive change in U.S. Dollars?
Not always. If you pay with U.S. Dollars, many businesses may return your change in Costa Rican Colones based on their current exchange rate.
Exchange Rates
Exchange rates fluctuate daily. If you're paying with a credit or debit card issued outside the United States, your bank or card issuer will convert the purchase to your home currency using their current exchange rate.
Your financial institution may also charge:
- Foreign transaction fees
- Currency conversion fees
Please contact your bank for details before traveling.
Can I exchange money in Costa Rica?
Yes. Currency exchange services are available at:
- Banks
- International airports
- Some hotels
- Authorized exchange offices
ATMs are also widely available and typically dispense Costa Rican Colones. Many ATMs also allow withdrawals using international debit cards.
